DIY BODY SCRUBS FOR GLOWING SKIN

If the spa is a no go these days like it is for most of us during this pandemic, then why not create the spa experience right at home? Homemade body scrubs are easy to make with simple ingredients that you most likely already have in your kitchen. Sea salt, sugar, coffee grinds, and oatmeal are all excellent for DIY scrubs, and if you want to blend something that makes you feel like you are at a spa, the addition of botanical and essential oils is the way to go. What exfoliant ingredient you use will depend on your skin type as well as any allergies or skin sensitivities you may have.

Sugar and oatmeal scrubs tend to be milder and work better for sensitive skin because the granules are smaller than sea salt and will melt quicker. Granulated table sugar is fine to use, however unrefined sugars contain more nutrients and will smell divine like coconut sugar or brown sugar. For salt scrubs table salt is not recommended, it is best to use sea salt as it pulls toxins from the body and the larger granules will easily exfoliate those dry elbows and knees. You can add Epsom salts to help with detoxification as well as to soothe aching muscles and soften skin. Coffee granules work well in a scrub and have the added bonus of tightening skin and helping to reduce the appearance of cellulite. By mixing half coffee granules and half sugar or salt you can get the best of both. Be sure to use dry coffee grounds when making your scrub, if they are wet they can quickly turn the scrub rancid.

Vegetable glycerin is a natural humectant and makes an excellent addition in body scrubs. Vegetable glycerin is available at most health food stores and even some grocery stores. For botanical base oils, try fractionated coconut, jojoba, grapeseed, sweet almond, or olive oil. This is also where you want to add your essential oils before blending. Essential oils will not only make your scrub smell divine they also have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Try sweet orange, lemongrass, peppermint, lavender and rosemary. Peppermint and citrus oils will energize whereas oils such as lavender are more calming. Be sure to blend your essential oils into your base oil first, then blend that into your exfoliation ingredients, and make sure you are using the correct dilution rates for blending, (see the link below).

Adding Vitamin E oil to your blend will not only benefit your skin but will also help to keep your scrub from going rancid. You only need a little of it and Vitamin E oil can be found at most pharmacies if you do not already have it. Whenever water gets into the scrub, as it will when you are using it in the bath or shower, it can grow bacteria. The Vitamin E oil will help to keep it a little longer however this is not enough to give it a long shelf life, use up your scrub within a couple of weeks to be safe. If you are making your scrub for a one time use then this is not necessary. Fruit scrubs have very little abrasive exfoliation and are used more for their alpha hydroxy acids which occur naturally in the fruit, such as strawberries, papaya, pineapple, and citrus. These types of scrubs tend to be used on the face where skin is more sensitive.

Below are several links for some fantastic DIY body scrub recipes. You can get creative and add things to your scrub that may not be in the recipes but add them slowly to make sure your blend is the right consistency, and if you are following a recipe you may need to tweak things here and there.
